GOOD TO KNOW
Before you go
Best time
Late June to August. We plan each departure around the moon phase: dark, moonless nights are best for the Milky Way, while a bright Moon suits lunar and moonlit landscape photos. Clear skies can never be guaranteed.
Accommodation
Hotels in Ulaanbaatar and Ölgii, two nights in tent camps at remote dark-sky sites and one night with a Kazakh family or at a ger camp.
Meals
Hotel breakfasts, local meals and fresh camp meals, plus a traditional meal with your Kazakh host family. Vegetarian, gluten-free or halal meals on request.
Transport
Domestic flights Ulaanbaatar ⇄ Ölgii and a private 4WD with an experienced local driver. The telescope and cameras travel in padded cases. Roads in the Altai are rough and some drives take most of a day.
What to bring
Warm layers, gloves and a windproof jacket (nights are cold, even in summer), a sleeping bag for cold nights, a red-light headlamp, spare batteries and power banks, a camera with a wide-angle lens and a sturdy tripod, and lens cloths. A full checklist is sent when you book.
Phone and internet
Mobile signal in Ulaanbaatar and Ölgii only (Days 1–2 and 6–7). There is no signal or Wi-Fi at the remote camps and charging is limited, so bring power banks.

FAQ
Questions travellers ask
Is this tour suitable for beginners?
+
Yes. No astronomy or photography experience is needed. Your tour leader explains the night sky, sets up the telescope and helps you with camera settings for night photography.
What is the best time for the telescope tour?
+
Late June to August, when roads in the Altai are open. We plan each departure around the moon phase: the darkest skies for the Milky Way come when the Moon is below the horizon.
Is travel insurance required?
+
Yes. We require all guests to have travel insurance that covers remote areas and emergency evacuation. We also recommend insuring your camera equipment.
How do I get to Bayan-Ölgii from Ulaanbaatar?
+
The tour includes round-trip domestic flights Ulaanbaatar ⇄ Ölgii. Flight times and baggage allowances are confirmed when you book; tell us early if you travel with heavy camera gear.
Can I join the tour as a solo traveller?
+
Yes. Solo travellers are welcome. This is a private tour; ask us and we will try to match you with other travellers.
What is the maximum group size?
+
We keep groups to 2–6 travellers so everyone gets time at the telescope and help with their camera.
Can the tour dates be customised?
+
Yes. Every departure is private, so you choose your dates between late June and August. We suggest dates around the new moon for the best Milky Way views.
Will I definitely see the Milky Way?
+
We cannot guarantee it. Cloud, wind and moonlight all affect what is visible. We choose dates and camps to give you the best chance, and on cloudy nights we switch to photography training, telescope setup, image processing and cultural activities.
Do I need my own camera or telescope?
+
We supply a portable telescope with eyepieces, a finder scope and tripod. Bring your own camera, ideally with a wide-angle lens and a sturdy tripod; a phone on a tripod also works for simple night shots.
Is vegetarian or special diet food available?
+
Yes. Vegetarian, gluten-free or halal meals are available on request. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you book.
Is there phone or internet connectivity during the tour?
+
Mobile signal is available in Ulaanbaatar and Ölgii but largely absent at the remote camps, and there is no Wi-Fi. Bring power banks, as charging is limited.
What should I pack for the telescope tour?
+
Warm layers, gloves and a windproof jacket, a sleeping bag for cold nights, a red-light headlamp, spare batteries, power banks, your camera, a wide-angle lens and a tripod. A full checklist is sent when you book.
Is this tour available for families with children?
+
Yes, families with children aged 10 and over are welcome. Observing sessions run late into the night, so talk to us about the pace for younger travellers.
How much does the tour cost?
+
From $3,594 per person for a private tour of 1–6 travellers, including domestic flights, private 4WD, guide, telescope equipment, accommodation and meals. International flights and travel insurance are not included.
Where do we sleep?
+
Hotels in Ulaanbaatar and Ölgii, tent camps at remote dark-sky sites and one night with a Kazakh family or at a ger camp.
What happens if the weather is bad?
+
On cloudy nights we switch to photography instruction, telescope training, image processing or cultural activities. In strong wind, rain or snow we secure the equipment and move to sheltered accommodation; safety always comes before the itinerary.
Is a sleeping bag included?
+
No. Please bring a sleeping bag suited to cold nights, as temperatures in the Altai can drop close to freezing even in summer.
