Q: Is this tour suitable for beginners?
A: Yes. The trekking sections are moderate — no technical climbing is required. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as some days involve 4–6 hours of walking or horse riding.
Q: What is the best time to do the eagle hunter tour?
A: May to September offers the best weather. September and October are especially rewarding — the Golden Eagle Festival takes place in early October in Bayan-Ulgii.
Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes. We require all guests to hold valid travel insurance including medical evacuation cover, as the tour takes place in a remote mountain region.
Q: How do I get to Bayan-Ulgii from Ulaanbaatar?
A: The tour includes round-trip domestic flights between Ulaanbaatar and Bayan-Ulgii (approximately 2 hours each way). Flights are operated by Hunnu Air or Mongolian Airlines. We handle all booking arrangements — you just need to arrive in Ulaanbaatar the evening before departure.
Q: Can I join the tour as a solo traveler?
A: Absolutely. Solo travelers are very welcome. We offer a solo price (1 PAX) and can also match solo travelers with others departing on the same dates if you prefer to share costs. Just let us know your preference when booking.
Q: What is the maximum group size?
A: We keep groups small — a maximum of 8 people. This ensures a more personal experience with the eagle hunter family and allows us to move efficiently through the mountain terrain. Private departures for individuals, couples, or families can be arranged on any date.
Q: Can the tour dates be customized?
A: Yes. We offer flexible private departures throughout the May–October season. If you have specific dates, a preferred itinerary, or want to combine this tour with the Golden Eagle Festival or another Mongolia experience, contact us and we will build a custom itinerary for you.
Q: Can I photograph the eagle hunters?
A: Absolutely. Photography is warmly welcomed. We recommend a telephoto lens for eagle-in-flight shots and a wide angle for landscape and ger interior shots.
Q: How experienced do I need to be with horse riding?
A: No prior horse riding experience is required. Mongolian horses are calm and well-suited to beginners. Your local horse guide will give you a brief introduction and ride alongside you throughout. If you are uncomfortable on horseback, jeep transport is always available as an alternative.
Q: Is vegetarian or special diet food available?
A: Yes. Vegetarian meals are available upon request — please inform us at the time of booking. Our dedicated expedition cook prepares all meals fresh each day using local ingredients. For other dietary requirements (gluten-free, halal, etc.), contact us in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Q: Is there phone or internet connectivity during the tour?
A: Mobile signal is available in Ulgii town (Day 1 and Day 7–8) but is largely absent in the Altai mountain areas. There is no Wi-Fi in the ger camps or at the camp sites. We recommend downloading offline maps and informing family and friends before departing into the mountains. This digital detox is one of the things our guests love most about the experience.
Q: What should I pack for the eagle hunter tour?
A: Key items to bring: warm layers (temperatures drop significantly at night, even in summer), a waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots, a sleeping bag (not included in the tour price), sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, and any personal medications. Camera gear is highly recommended. A full packing list is sent to you upon booking confirmation.
Q: Is this tour available for families with children?
A: Yes, families are welcome. We recommend this tour for children aged 10 and above, as some hiking sections are long. Younger children can join jeep transport instead of trekking. The eagle hunter family visit is particularly magical for kids — they often get to hold a golden eagle themselves. Contact us to arrange a family-friendly version of the itinerary.
